Epsom and Ewell MP Helen Maguire demands bosses’ bonus ban for Thames Water following new report
Helen Maguire, MP for Epsom & Ewell, has demanded an immediate ban on executive bonuses at Thames Water after it was announced on Tuesday that the company would have to pay back £56.8 million to their customers due to poor performance. Despite this record fine, most customers will only see their water bills decrease by a few pounds.
This announcement comes as the Government’s Water Bill was debated in Parliament yesterday. The Liberal Democrats have said the bill is only a ‘half-measure’ and plans to table an amendment that would enforce an immediate ban on water company bosses’ bonuses.
Over 11,000 hours of untreated sewage was dumped into the River Mole in 2023 and over 4,500 hours’-worth were dumped into the Mole in the first two months of 2024 alone. Unfortunately, with no immediate remedy, the number of overflows will continue to rise unabated.
Member of Parliament for Epsom & Ewell, Helen Maguire said:
“For too long the Conservatives have allowed water companies to go about their business without any concern for the people for whom they are meant to be providing a responsible, safe and reliable service. Instead, they are pumping filthy water in to our waterways whilst big bosses are granted massive bonuses. This is simply reprehensible behaviour and Thames Water, as well as all other water companies, must be held to account.”
