Helen Maguire MP appointed Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Defence

Maguire brings first-hand military experience to the role

The Liberal Democrats recently announced the appointment of Helen Maguire, MP for Epsom & Ewell, as the party’s new Spokesperson for Defence.

Having served in the Armed Forces, Maguire is ready to lead the party’s vision for a modern, secure, and responsible national defence strategy. Her appointment to this role follows the Liberal Democrats’ first reshuffle since the party won a record number of seats in the general election.

Helen Maguire’s military background distinguishes her as a leading voice on defence issues within the party. Before entering politics, Maguire served as an officer in the British Army, including operational tours in Iraq and Bosnia. Her hands-on experience provides her with a unique understanding of the challenges facing the UK’s armed forces today.

Upon her appointment, Helen said: “I am grateful for this opportunity to be the Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Defence and to hold the Defence Secretary to account in the House of Commons. I will not take this responsibility for granted and will use it to give a voice to the military personnel, fighting on the ground, who risk their lives every day to keep this country and its people safe.”

Her first role will be to look at the Strategic Defence Review, which came out in July 2024 and is due for review early 2025.
