Helen Maguire MP votes for compensation for 5420 WASPI women in Epsom & Ewell

In a vote in Parliament, Liberal Democrat MP for Epsom & Ewell, Helen Maguire voted for a bill paving the way to give compensation to WASPI women.

It follows an independent report that found they had suffered an injustice due to a failure to properly inform them of pension age changes.

The Epsom & Ewell MP says that she is “proud” to vote for the bill that would have righted a “gross injustice”.

Helen Maguire has written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall MP, on multiple occasions to raise her serious concerns, highlighting that the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) failure to communicate increases to the State Pension age has forced many in Epsom & Ewell back into work just to make ends meet.

She went on to express her “immense disappointment” that Conservative and Labour MPs had failed to back it and promised to “keep fighting” until every WASPI women in Epsom & Ewell gets the compensation and justice they are owed.

Liberal Democrat MP for Epsom & Ewell, Helen Maguire said:

“Today I was proud to vote for a bill to tackle the gross injustice faced by the 5420 WASPI women here in Epsom & Ewell.

“I have already heard from countless women in our area who have felt devastated and betrayed due to this scandal.

“For years senior Labour representatives and even the Prime Minister himself, pledged to deliver fair compensation to those impacted by changes these women had no control over. They made a conscious political choice to break that promise and ignore the findings of the independent watchdog.

“For Conservative and Labour MPs to fail to back these women is an immense disappointment. All they are asking for is fairness.

“I, alongside my fellow Liberal Democrat MPs, will continue to stand up for the WASPI women at every turn and keep fighting until they get the justice that they deserve.”
