LIB DEMS PULL OUT THE BIG GUNS TO BACK HELEN MAGUIRE IN EPSOM & EWELL

Former Liberal Democrat leader and Business Minister Sir Vince Cable was at the Leatherhead Institute on Friday to meet Epsom and Ewell activists and endorse the Parliamentary candidature of former soldier Helen Maguire.

With a range of polls now putting the Liberal Democrats as the main challengers for parliamentary seats in much of Surrey, Cable’s intervention in Epsom & Ewell is a boost in what was once a largely Conservative constituency and where Labour has traditionally often come a poor third in the last 30 years.

Maguire has been tirelessly campaigning for the past year and a half, as the Conservative lead in Epsom & Ewell has dwindled following a string of serious mishaps by successive Tory Governments and now a challenge from the Reform Party which is fielding a candidate to challenge the Conservatives’ domination of right-wing politics in the area.

Maguire has been challenging the government in three key areas – to improve health services in Epsom, Leatherhead, Ashtead and Ewell by building a new emergency care hospital for local residents; bearing down on water companies who have been polluting our rivers; and pushing for measures to alleviate the cost-of-living crisis that has followed economic mismanagement by the Johnson-, Truss- and Sunak-led Conservative governments.

“It is really encouraging that the national party is taking notice of the hard work Liberal Democrats have been putting into the Epsom & Ewell constituency to give hope to voters that the Liberal Democrats can help improve their lives. So, we are delighted that Vince Cable has taken the time to be with us this evening,” said Maguire.

Sir Vince Cable responded saying, “For too long the constituents of Epsom & Ewell have been overlooked, so I’m please to endorse a local candidate who has clearly got their interests at heart”.
