An open letter to Inspector Kelly Clifton-Sinclair and Chief Constable Tim de Meyer

Condemning violence against residents and property: an open letter from Helen Maguire, 7 June 2024

Dear Inspector Clifton-Sinclair

I am aware of recent incidents of violence against residents and property in at least three areas of the Epsom and Ewell constituency: Langley Vale, Stoneleigh and Leatherhead.

Needless to say, this cluster of incidents of unacceptable behaviour, be it anti-social behaviour, criminal damage or grievous bodily harm, is completely unacceptable.

I am grateful to you for ensuring an increased police presence in the area of Langley Vale where the most recent incidents took place. But we really need a preventative police presence, not only a response where incidents have taken place.

The Conservatives’ inspired reduction in police community support officers (4,500 reductions since 2015) have tied your hands somewhat, which is why Liberal Democrats are focused on getting your hard-pressed officers back into communities.

The expenditure of £100 million on Police and Crime Commissioner’s Offices since 2019 and a further £50 million on the associated elections represents a waste of public money, when policing on the beat is what you, my voters and all the country wants to see.

I hope with Liberal Democrat MPs being returned on 4 July, you will have the allies you need to tackle the crime that rightly distresses so many residents.

I’m really grateful for everything that you can do to demonstrate an active presence in all parts of the Epsom and Ewell constituency.

I am sending a copy of this message also to the Chief Constable of Surrey.

Kind regards

Helen Maguire
