Local Lib Dem MP slams rail fare rise as services “fail” passengers in Epsom & Ewell
Epsom & Ewell MP, Helen Maguire has urged for rail fares to be frozen after they rose by 4.6% this weekend.
The cost of an annual season ticket from Leatherhead to London Zones 1-6 has risen to more than £4000.
It follows ticket price rises of 3.8% in 2022, 5.9% in 2023, and 4.9% in 2024.
Lib Dem MP Helen Maguire said that people in Epsom, Ewell, Ashtead and Leatherhead should not be paying more for a service that is “simply not working” after years of Conservative Party neglect and mismanagement.
Liberal Democrat MP for Epsom & Ewell, Helen Maguire said:
“Rail passengers in Epsom, Ewell, Ashtead and Leatherhead are being hammered by terrible rises in ticket prices, whilst our railways are failing them.
“After years of mismanagement by the previous Conservative government, and no signs of improvement under Labour, it’s a slap in the face for my constituents.
“They are already feeling the effects of reduced services and overcrowded trains with limited standing room, only for ticket prices to rise again this year.”
“We must now freeze fares to stop passengers from paying more for a service that is simply not delivering.”
